Los Angeles musical partners Kim Shattuck and Melanie Vammen started rocking together with legendary all chick garage rockers, The Pandoras in the late ‘80s. While on an East Coast tour, they met Palmyra Delran in Philly and hit it off. The trio reconnected when Kim and Melanie were on tour with their new band, The Muffs and stayed in touch. Kim and Palmyra always joked that they should all have a band together, but the timing didn’t allow it since Palmyra was in NYC and Kim & Melanie were in L.A.
Decades later, Kim became affected with ALS, which ran in her family. During her private battle, she brought up the idea of starting a band again, and Palmyra thought - yes, we can do this now. They partnered with Stevie Van Zandt and his Wicked Cool Records label, recorded their parts in different studios, and assembled an EP,
“Uh Oh… It’s The Coolies” with 100% of the money going toward ALS research, raising over $15,000. The supergroup set out on a mission to discover treatments and cures for ALS, and to serve, advocate for, and empower people affected by the condition.
Sadly, after a courageous two year fight, Kim passed away, but not before planning with Melanie and Palmyra how important it was to her that they continue with The Coolies. Kim gave her unfinished song demos to her ‘Coolies sisters’ to complete and carry on with new material.
The opportunity arose for The Coolies to be included on a Go-Gos tribute album, so the gals invited Clem Burke to play drums on the record, who invited Kathy Valentine to play bass. The result was a single, “King Of Confusion” released on Wicked Cool. Next came “Bad Bad Boy” - a co-write by Kim & Palmyra, once again with Kathy Valentine & Clem Burke as rhythm section. The Coolies performed their first ever live shows on the Maiden
Voyage of Little Steven’s Coolest Cruise In The World. Rounding out the live band, Melanie & Palmyra were joined by Karen Basset (from The Pandoras), and Linda Pitmon (from Zuzu’s Petals & The Baseball Project).
Future plans for the Coolies include recording more of the songs that Kim left behind, now being completed by Palmyra & Melanie. Joining them in the studio will be Kathy Valentine on bass & Linda Pitmon taking over for Clem Burke after his passing
